Condition monitoring is a common practice, used by nearly all maintenance professionals. It is the process wherein future incidents are predicted and addressed through scheduled preventative maintenance. There are a few very common forms that are used within the industrial community on a regular, recurring basis and have been for years. These methods of analysis help to keep industrial workers safe, machinery working, and efficiency high. They are used in some of the most complex and dangerous work environments in the world.
Vibration analysis is the first and most common form of this type of monitoring. In this scenario, measurements are taken through transducers and the results are then compared with baseline historical readings from similar pieces of machinery. Experts can look at these readings and analyze them in a very complex manner, often determining specifically what sort of malfunction in a machine would lead to the vibration being off in the way that is being represented.
Visual inspection is another form of condition monitoring, though it is far less advanced and can sometimes be less of a science then the detailed pinpoint accuracy of vibration analysis. It is often used in conjunction with other more precise measurements. Visual inspection, works exactly the way it sounds, an expert engineer examines machinery on a regular basis looking for clear discrepancies such as leaks or cracks, which are indicative of a problem.
Yet another method, which works by comparing the current machine's status to an ideal model, is known as performance analysis. This is another common type of monitoring that is frequently used to determine the best and most economical time to replace turbine engines and similar devices. These machines become more expensive as they become less efficient and often the time that they are changed out has to do with an efficiency analysis determining that they officially cost more to run than they will to replace.
All industries wherein machines such as motors, turbines, and centrifugal pumps are frequently used must invest in some sort of condition monitoring in order to ensure efficiency and safety. The best way to prevent accidents or breakdowns is to predict them, which is the reason that so many companies invest time and money in accurately predicting the rate of deterioration for their machinery. Each year this type of analysis becomes more advanced, with many businesses now using computers in conjunction with human engineers to monitor these devices in a number of different ways.
