Chances are good that even if you're not using PPC for your business, you've probably used it in your shopping or research time on the internet. These are those little links that line the sides of pages, beckoning you to find out what they have to offer. Whenever you click onto one of these links, the PPC company charges the person who places the ad for the click. But with well placed PPC campaigns, you can often get a lot of clicks that turn into sales. That's the key with PPC – conversion. Here are three things you need to keep in mind as you investigate this marketing tactic.

The PPC Advertisement Needs to Be Exciting

In order to get someone to click onto your PPC advertisement, you need to make sure you are telling them exactly why it's important for them to find out more. For example, if you are selling a weight loss product, you might want to advertise how much weight someone can lose in a short amount of time (Lose Ten Pounds in Two Weeks With No Exercise). You need to encourage people to click on that link so that they will go to your site, see what you have to offer, and then make a purchase.

PPC Fraud is a Real Issue

But as with any good thing, there are downsides that you need to keep in mind as well. Whenever someone clicks on your PPC link, you need a pay a small amount of money in order to keep the link where it is. Some competitors have been known to hire people to click on these links over and over so that you have to pay large amounts of money. This is devastating to smaller businesses that might not have the money to spend on these costs. Because there is no real way to prevent this or to control this, you need to simply be aware of your PPC click numbers every day to see if there is a spike in clicks from a certain IP address or if there are a number of clicks that aren't yielding purchases. If you contact the PPC link service to complain about these excessive clicks, you may be able to change the PPC advertisement to try to avoid these issues.

PPC Should Not be the Only Strategy

When you're trying to draw new people to your website, you don't want to limit your marketing techniques to only PPC. You should also be working on the SEO of your website in addition to researching affiliates and other traditional advertisements. Spread the word about your website with flyers and links in your emails to everyone too. PPC is a great way to start drawing people into your site, but since many people are not sure if they can trust PPC links, they're not a good thing to employ as a singular marketing strategy.

Pay per click advertising is simply not going away any time soon, so you can either ignore it completely or see if it works for you. You might want to try running a few advertisements on a few different websites to see if you can actually increase your website traffic. Once you've gotten those numbers up, try stopping the PPC for a while to see if you can maintain those numbers with other advertising strategies.

PPC is a great way to cheaply begin to spread the word about your website, but with the danger of PPC fraud, some smaller businesses may not be able to take that risk. By watching your numbers and weighing the benefit, you can make the best decision about PPC for your needs.
