The toilet is a fantastic invention, it makes our households wonderfully hygienic. Nowadays we can also use the latest of plumbing technology to reduce the amount of water being used through dual flush toilets, and we can also use old technology like bidets to improve even further the hygienic qualities of our toilets. Although the bidet isn?t yet popular throughout the States, it is very popular and a standard fixture in many countries around the world.

The bidet has existed for a very long while. Marc-Antoine Jacoud is commonly referred to as the person who created it. The bidet seems to have come out of the work of furniture creators in France during the seventeenth century. No definitive date, however, is known. There was one furniture creator who worked for the Royal Family, one Des Rosiers, who may have been the real inventor. It is hard to know for sure as written accounts only begin in 1710. By the nineteen hundreds, due to advancements in plumbing, the bidet became a bathroom rather than a bedroom fixture. In 1960, the bidet became electronic, complete with an attachment which would expand on a regular toilet.

It works quite simply by sending a soothing jet of water to clean you after using the toilet. In Europe you'll find it common as either a separate fixture or as part of the toilet bowl. You may think this sounds very odd, and for those who haven't tried it, I don't blame you, but it is in fact more hygienic than using toilet paper and the technology is now so advanced that many don't use toilet paper at all.

You can also choose from a wide variety of accessories and designs. Don't think for a minute that these can be installed in some of the finest homes and hotels in the world and not look good. In fact, in some countries, you'll find bidets are available in public bathrooms. And to add to your new pleasure of using the toilet, you can have heated seats, pulsating streams, adjustable temperature streams and even built in dryers. And the toilets can come in pretty well any design or material you could want in your bathroom. These of course come at a cost, so it's worthwhile investigating the options that suit both your requirements and your budget.

If you're not totally convinced, you can buy a bidet seat. This way you fix the bidet seat onto your existing toilet seat, and then you don't have to buy an entirely new fixture. There are now a wide range of these seats so that you can have all the convenience of a bidet, without changing your toilet.

If you're still not convinced, then next time you're on a trip to Europe, instead of avoiding the bidet, give it a go and see what you think. It could change the way you use the toilet forever!
