The good news about living in a rural community is that, not only can you enjoy the great outdoors and partake in all sorts of activities that urban dwellers can only dream about or perhaps participate in occasionally when they go on holiday, but also that septic tank technology is now highly effective and can keep your home and your loved ones safe and healthy. It is also simple to keep running effectively if it is regularly maintained and not overloaded. This is particularly important if you are looking at doing renovations or increasing the number of people living in the house. A septic tank is basically a holding tank where your waste sewage is broken down by bacteria, in much the same way as many city sewage systems work, except on a much smaller basis. And in the same way that you shouldn't put any items like fat or sanitary products down the toilet in a city toilet, so you shouldn't in a septic tank system. In fact, you should be even more careful, and even consider using single ply toilet paper, anything to make the job easier for your tank to not be overwhelmed.

The more water and waste you put into the system, the more chance it has of being overloaded, and this is something you really want to avoid, as the sludge could be pushed out into the drainfield and this is neither a pretty nor a cheap thing to clean up. To this end, never empty a spa pool in its entirety into the system. And if you have baths, try to space out their emptying so as a large volume doesn't go into the system at the same time. And try not to use more than two water appliances at the same time, for example, the clothes washing machine and the dishwasher.

It is a good idea when living in a rural community, particularly where you are relying on tank water, to employ as many water pressure saving devices in your home, including on your faucets and your shower heads. This will reduce the amount of water you use, and will therefore reduce the amount of water going into the septic system. It is also a good idea to regularly check that your taps and toilet are not leaking. It may surprise you that a drip a second can result in thousands of gallons of water being leaked every month. This water will unnecessarily fill your septic system.

If you are renovating and adding more water appliances or fixtures, it is good to consult with your septic tank company to discuss whether your current tank and drain field will be able to cope with the extra demand. It may be necessary to increase the size of your tank and field, which will be good to know when you are working out the expenses of your home renovations.

Finally, it is good to make sure you get the septic tank maintenance company to visit annually. Many will offer a maintenance plan which works out cheaper if there is an emergency and you need to them to make an unscheduled visit. The more you do to keep your system in good working order, the more years it will keep working satisfactorily.
