Hiring a professional plumber seems to be a very easy job if you ask any average household guy. People usually consult a phone directory and pick anyone randomly, without bothering to do more research. However, there are still some steps you should take to minimize your expenditure and to have the work done smoothly. This article outlines some basic points you need to consider while hiring a plumber.

The best way to find one would be through referrals. Ask you relatives, friends, and neighbors if they know of any expert plumber. If they have come across one and received a satisfactory service, then you can pick the same one. If you can't find a plumber through a referral, you can look into a directory - an online plumbing directory for instance - and go through some precautionary steps to ensure a smooth job.

Also keep your needs in mind while making the selection. Most plumbers have got more experience of the daily routine jobs like repairing a toilet cistern or fixing a clogged drain. These are good for small emergency jobs but aren't the ideal type if you need renovation. For that, you must seek a plumber who is a specialist in remodeling bathrooms and kitchens. And you may also find some difference in plumbers specializing in commercial vs. residential work.

Once you've gathered the contact details of a few seemingly qualified plumbers in your area, do some background research about them. A good number of states ask plumbers to have a license or some sort of state certification. So you can call the relevant local body and confirm it the license is valid or not. Also ask if they have any complaints in their records for that license holder. You can also consult the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints exist for your selected plumber.

If you need a remodeling job, then it's better to choose a couple plumbers and invite them to survey your house, look at the requirements, and give you a fair estimate of the entire cost including their fees and any materials that you will need. It might also be a good idea to ask them how much would be their charges if you yourself buy the needed materials and provide them. Plumbers usually get the materials on wholesale rates so they still save some commission in between if they bring the materials themselves. But it's not usually much different for you as you will not be able to acquire those goods on the same rates. However, if basic research shows that your selected guys are ripping you off by asking more than the retail price of the goods, then you may better look for another plumber. Chances are that if he's ripping you on one end, he may be doing the same on the other ends too. Also make sure that the materials used are of high quality, as low quality materials can become a problem soon.

While calling a plumber is sometimes necessary, you can still try out a few small repairs on your own. And even if you do arrange a plumber, one easy way to save money is to do some preliminary jobs yourself so that the plumber's chargeable time reduces.
