A skilled plumbing pro has to know how to handle all kinds of situations: there are the usual "cat stuck in the tree" situations, where it's as simple as turning a knob or tightening up a valve, and then there are those disasters that take very skilled attention and technical knowledge to fix. Looking at the difference between the two can help homeowners assess their plumbing situations.
First, there's the issue of preventive maintenance. The home plumber will periodically inspect all sorts of home appliances and infrastructure from the hot and cold water lines to the water heater, from the drains to the installations for indoor and outdoor running water. That's all part of the job, but in other situations, a lot of creativity and problem-solving is called for. Pros have to know how to respond to emergency plumbing, and a lot of this lies in applying some safety tips.
In a situation where there may be at leak or burst pipe, one of the first things is to turn off the home's water system. The plumbers will have to find shut off valves and securely turn off the sources of water to problem areas before starting work on damaged lines or other structures.
In some cases, it may also be necessary to turn off the line to the water heater, whether that is a gas or electric line. Plumbers want to avoid unfortunate incidents like the overheating of water heaters that can cause a safety risk.
In cases of flooding, a plumber will also want to turn off the electrical system to the entire property or an area that has been targeted as the source of the problem. Skilled pros will tell you that electricity and water do not mix, and that paying attention to this very basic fact can literally be a lifesaver on the job. When disaster threatens, knowing about which systems need to be turned off can be very valuable.
A professional plumber in some situations may start with some basic home system mapping, either by interviewing the property owner, or by inspecting the entire home to determine where main supply lines are for water and electrical systems, and how these join up or interconnect. The plumber may also use documentation about the property to determine these factors.
In specific cases where the property may need to be evacuated, a skilled plumber should include a timeline including estimates for the time it will take to complete critical work that will make a space livable again. This is an important part of "plumber customer service" - that is, a large part of the contracting job is educating the inhabitants and the property owner about any specific conditions that will affect those who enter a dwelling. It is this mix of knowledge and communication that facilitates greater understanding between the client and the contractor, and good attention to these skills will help a general plumbing contractor to get a good reputation as an expert in both preventative and emergency plumbing.
