The Internet is robust with claims of free debt settlement services, and contradictory statements in regards to debt settlement, and consumer credit counseling. In reality, there is no such thing as free debt services, and consumers would do well to question anything that is Free. As the old adage goes, you get what you pay for.

So how are credit card holders expected to navigate this enormous amount of information, especially when at every turn, the information available seems to contradict each other's claims. The answer is quite logical, as most answers are. When selecting a vehicle to help rid you of your credit card debt, do what you would do while shopping for any other product. Look for companies that come up atop the list in the search ratings, as search engine optimization costs money, and if a company has money to spend, it has satisfied paying customers that are generating those advertising dollars. After all, when you set out to purchase a television do you frequent large retailers, or the small repair shop on the corner? The answer is evident. You most likely visit the larger retailers because of their selection, which brings us to our second point; options.

When searching out a trustworthy firm to help you to financial freedom, look for the same options you would when shopping for any other product. Not every consumer's financial woes are identical and neither should the solutions that solve them. A reputable company will always offer options to meet different financial goals. These options should include, not for profit consumer counseling, a debt settlement option, and lastly bankruptcy. This will narrow the playing field dramatically as you wade through the multitude of companies offering just a single program.

Lastly, when considering which program is right for you, it's important to have legal representation. Reputable debt management companies will assign an attorney to you that are licensed in your state, as attorneys have a fiduciary responsibility to advise you which program will protect your best interest, and have the highest success rate to get your finances back on track.

Remember, you're not alone, many Americans are currently facing the worst financial crisis of their lives, which is why the Government has passed new legislation regulating credit card best practices. I hope this article can help point consumers in the right direction on what to look for when searching for reputable companies that offer options, don't make false claims for free services, and will appoint an attorney to protect your best interests.
