Due to the high number of applicants applying for each job vacancy advertised a high number of people are currently unemployed. With experts warning that there could be a double-dip recession emerging higher unemployment rates are to be expected. Long-term unemployment isn't unheard of nowadays and can have devastating financial and emotional effects on many individuals and their families. This can be an extremely stressful time and could even lead to feelings of depression.
If you're currently unemployed and worrying about the future, you need to ensure that you minimize your unemployment stress in order to remain confident and increase your chances of getting hired.
Avoid Typical "Goal Setting"
Although setting yourself targets of attending X amount of interviews or setting yourself a goal offinding a new job within 6 months may seem like great motivational ideas, but can have a backlash effect if you don't meet your intended targets. With the job market being so unpredictable it's hard to place a time on how long it will take you to seek employment as many of the factors that willaffect the time span of your unemployment are completely out of your power.
The industry you're applying for jobs within can severely affect your likelihood of getting hired, some niches have been hit harder in terms of requiring employees - the health sector has recently taken a hard hit leaving many people redundant and job application competition increasing. Placing a time scale on returning to employment can lead to feelings of failure and lack of confidence when such targets aren't met. Alternatively, you could set yourself feasible goals such as to contact X amount of job vacancies per week which are more realistic and more likely to raise your confidence rather than knock it.
Allow Others to Help
Receiving and accepting help from different sources cannot only increase your chances of employment, it can also help to lift some of the stress from your shoulders. Online recruitment specialists and employment agencies make it easier to source vacancies and some even contact potential employers with your resume on your behalf. This can help you to find temporary/fixed-term employment to reduce some of your financial strain and rebuild your confidence.
It's not just recruitment specialists who can help you find the return path to employment, alerting people within your social circles that you're currently job seeking could be the hidden key to success. With many people understanding the current unemployment situation many friends and family will be keen to help. If there are any vacancies at the companies they work for you could be in with a higher chance of getting hired. Employers are more likely to hire an applicant who has been recommended by a current and well-trusted employee. Inform those who you are particularly close to that you're looking for a job, pass on your CV and allow them to help - this again reduces some of the strain you're under. One of the key aspects to successful job seeking is keeping an open mind. Accept help from others, be prepared to consider a job role that isn't necessarily related to your ultimate career goal and retain your social life. Being a recluse and having no fun will only lower your confidence and general happiness.
