Our batteries are one of those things that we really don't think about until we absolutely have to. Most of the time they do their work, the car starts and runs just fine, and we just merrily go on our way. However, there are, of course, the other instances when the battery malfunctions, leaving us stranded, angry, and late. The truth is, most of these occasions are one hundred percent avoidable if we'd only follow the advice of the experts and maintain and replace our batteries on schedule. Most auto repair shops would be happy to give you the full scoop on battery care, but here are a few tips to keep in mind.

The battery is sort of the power company of your car. It provides electrical energy to your car including the starter, ignition, and lighting system. Without a working battery, your car would not start, run, or even play the radio. Pretty easy to see why they are so important.

Car batteries, if properly maintained, can be expected to last about four years. However, in colder and harsher climates, auto repair experts tell us that even with proper maintenance, batteries often need to be replaced after three years of normal use.

To get the most out of your battery, you should learn how to keep it properly maintained. When you bring your vehicle in for routine maintenance, the mechanics will check whether the battery has the proper amount of water. Naturally, for older car batteries, this checklist item should be done more often. However, some cars have a maintenance-free battery, meaning that the battery itself is sealed shut and doesn't require servicing. Speak to your local mechanic or auto repair shop to learn about the type of battery you have.

When your battery starts to age, there will be some telltale signs. Your car will be difficult to start; lights, including headlamps, may be dimmer than normal and may brighten when you rev the engine; and overall performance of your car may suffer. Wintertime is especially tough on batteries because when the temperatures drop, the battery has to work extra hard to start the car due to the chemical makeup of the cells. Of course, winter is when it is most important to have a fully functioning battery, because getting stranded in freezing temperatures is not just inconvenient, it's dangerous.

New batteries are typically very affordable and relatively easy to maintain. Not replacing and taking good care of them can leave you in a bad spot. So, it's best to consult your local auto repair shop and get your battery checked out as soon as possible.

If you need foreign car repair in Denver Author Stephen Daniels recommends the mechanics at Sixth Avenue Auto. They specialize in working on Audis and Volkswagens, but also service domestic cars. All work at this trustworthy neighborhood shop is performed by ASE-certified technicians.
