The art of Chiropractic medicine has been around for centuries. Today the number of chiropractors has exceeded 50,000 practicing doctors in the United States. This ranks third among health care professionals behind only physicians and dentists. The reason for the large number of chiropractors is directly related to the demand of patients. More and more people today are electing to take the avenue of a more natural healing process. This holistic approach to healthcare requires maintenance of the spine, not just rehabilitation. This "repeat customer concept" of maintenance rather than cure, enables the chiropractor to fill his book of business and make a decent living with little to no subsequent marketing.
For a little history on the use of chiropractic medicine we have to go all the way back to ancient China. The time-frame is as early as 2700 B.C. in China and Egypt. Other cultures have also used this form of healing such as the Tibetans and Hindus. In North America, hieroglyphics depict the use of "back walking" by the early native Indian inhabitants. Just as with many other forms of natural healing, this non-invasive, drug-free process is an integral part of the human Hippocratic history. Hippocrates himself understood the value of spinal manipulation. He understood the relationship of the nervous system and disease. A healthy spine is the key to keeping all body processes functioning to their maximum efficiency. When the body is functioning efficiently it is able to stave off disease and other ailments common to the greater population. Avoiding these diseases and ailments leads to a healthier, more productive life.
The United States alone has over 20 million patients under chiropractic care. Worldwide the number is massive. This science is not as popular in less civilized countries due to the extensive education required to be a licensed practitioner of chiropractic medicine. The schooling required is much more intensive than typical health care providers. Although not as intensive as physicians and dentists, the chiropractic education takes years to master. A thorough understanding of the nervous system and how it relates to all bodily functions is essential. The manipulation of the spine to repair subluxations and allow free flow of blood and synapses to the nervous system is the core of the science.
Each level of the vertebrae carries nerves to different functions of the body. For example, the upper vertebrae have discs and nerve roots denoted with the letter "C". This stands for the cervical area of the spine or the neck area. There are 7 cervical discs with 8 nerve roots. This nomenclature is in no way related to the female cervical area known as the cervix. The other discs and nerve root labels are "T" for thoracic and "L" for lumbar. An additional area is labeled as the sacral area. This is your lower spine and tailbone. By understanding which parts of the spine are associated with which body functions it is possible to manipulate and stimulate that particular vertebrae and nerves.
There are numerous symptoms that can be treated by pinpoint manipulation of the associated vertebrae. For example, allergies, head colds, runny nose, and other sinus related problems are associated with the cervical vertebrae. The nerves passing through those vertebrae control the eyes, the lacrimal gland, parotid gland and the arms. Additionally, the heart, lungs and chest all have nerves running through the cervical part of the spine. That is why someone who has been paralyzed by severing the nerves at that particular cervical disc cannot survive without the aid of life support systems. The spine and its health are paramount to good health and the sole focus of chiropractic medicine.
Almost every ailment known to man can be treated holistically with the persistent consistent use of spine manipulation. Maintenance is the key. Having your spine manipulated regularly keeps your nervous system operating efficiently and thereby giving the body maximum potential for normalcy.
Chiropractors can help with such things as IBS relief and spine manipulation can be an effective Irritable Bowel Syndrome treatment . The lumbar region of the spine is directly connected to the problems of IBS. You can get more information about IBS, its symptoms and treatments at http://ibsrelief.selishealth.com
