The highest grossing film of all time is James Cameron’s Avatar. It has made over $2,266,696,179.00 worldwide and is still going. It surpassed James Cameron’s Titanic in just a couple short months.

Development on Avatar began in 1994 and it was supposed to start filming after Titanic in 1997 but according to Cameron the necessary technology was not available to portray his vision for the film. In 2005 he began working on the language for the film and in 2006 started on the script. Avatar premiered on December 10, 2009 in London and in North America on December 18, 2009 . It was released in traditional two-dimensional projection as well as in 3-D projection.

Avatar takes place in 2154 on Pandora, an earth like moon. Its atmosphere is toxic to humans forcing any human there to wear a breathing mask. It is inhabited by the Na’vi, 10 foot tall blue skinned species that live in harmony with nature. A corporation is on Pandora mining unobtainium, a valuable mineral located right where the Na’vi live. The corporation is secured by a private security force called Sec-Ops. There is also a group of scientists on Pandora trying to create a relationship with the Na’vis by growing hybrid bodies called avatars that are operated via mental link with matching humans. The corporation wants any information they can have on the Na’vi from the scientists so it will be easier for them to mine the mineral. While the scientists are out collecting data on Pandora one of them, Jake, is separated from the others during an attack. Jake is rescued from the forest by Neytiri, a female Na’vi, who brings him back to her clan at Hometree. Once he is at Homtree, the clan leader tells Neytiri that she must show Jake the ways of the Na’vi.

When Jake returns to his homebase, the head of the corportation tells him that he needs all the information he can on the Na’vi that would be able to help them force cooperation. When Grace, the head scientist, hears of this she moves all of them to another facility. Over the next three months, Jake grows closer to the Na’vi and to Neytiri as he explains on his video diaries. Once the corporation gets ahold of Jakes videos and realize the Na’vi will never leave Hometree, where the mine is located, they order it destroyed. Jake and Grace have one hour to convince the Na’vi to leave before it gets destroyed. When Jake reveals his original plan to the Na’vi, he is accused of betrayal and his and Grace’s avatars are taken captive. Hometree is destroyed and many Na’vi are killed.

Once Jake regains the Na’vi’s trust, he unites several clans of them to repel the humans. As the security forces attack the Na’vi there are many casulaties but once nature joins the fight the security forces are overwhelmed. All humans are then banned from Pandora except for Jake and the scientists.

Avatar was nominated for nine Academy Awards and Critics Choice Awards. It also has four nominations for the Golden Globe Awards. It has became the first movie to gross more than 2 billion in sales. Due to the success for the first film James Cameron announced that he will be making a sequel to the movie.
