Anxiety is the state of apprehension, where a person feels an immense deal of worry and fear for a realistic or imagined threat. It can be a healthy thing at some level. However, the coping mechanisms of people vary. Some have the ability to adapt well in the changes, in their environment, making them feel only minimal anxiety. But there are some people who have a low tolerance for stress, trauma and fear. These are the people who commonly succumb to panic attacks. If you are that kind of person, it is time to equip yourself with the right information and start attacking anxiety out of your life.

Anxiety disorder is a general term used for a group of psychological disorders which have one common denominator, anxiety. Under it is the generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, phobic disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. In attacking anxiety, it is essential to know first which anxiety disorder you have.

Generalized anxiety usually results from normal stressful events in ones life. In this disorder, worrying becomes a normal occurrence and a way of coping with stress. It may include physical symptoms like upset stomach and dry mouth. This anxiety can cause a disruption in the interpersonal, occupational and social functions of a person. Panic disorder is the experience of recurrent episodes of panic attacks.

Panic attacks are sudden feeling of anxiety, fear and apprehension which peaks in ten minutes. It can occur spontaneously and oftentimes mistaken as heart attack or a person is going crazy. Phobic disorders are caused by an illogical fear of something. A source of phobia can be anything, and it can cause a serious attack of anxiety. Post-traumatic stress disorder is the illness caused by traumatic incident. This makes a person succumb to anxiety when thinking about the tragedy with caused the trauma. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is the most famous among the anxiety disorders. It involves repetition of actions to comfort one's self. For example, a person with the obsessive-compulsive disorder may wash his or her hands thirty times to make sure that all the microorganisms in it are dead. It could also be noticed when a person has routines that alters the normal activities of daily living. It usually makes a disruption in the other aspects of a person's life.

Obsessive-compulsive personality is often mistaken for obsessive-compulsive disorder. Although people who has obsessive-compulsive personality have repetitive actions and routines, their activities of daily living is normal and no disruptions were made in the other aspects of his or her life.

Anxiety disorders are diagnosed by psychiatrists. So, you still need the diagnosis of a psychiatrist before undergoing treatment. This is only a guide on how to recognize the signs when you have it. Once it is confirmed and you already know the anxiety disorder you have, you can then easily search for the best way of attacking anxiety. It is generally managed with relaxing techniques like breathing exercises, massage and acupuncture, and many others.

Gaining the right knowledge about your disorder in itself is a great way of attacking anxiety. This is because it lessens the apprehension that you feel.
