Drop shipping is the term given to a product delivery method in which the seller does not keep or dispatch products to the buyer, but instead the product is directly dispatched by the manufacturer while the seller accepts the payment for the order. In this delivery method, the seller acts like a middleman between the customer and the manufacturer. The seller makes profit based on the difference of the retail and the wholesale price. Drop shipping is really beneficial to small retail shops and those businesses which use catalogues for sales. Outlined below are some of the major advantages of drop shipping.

No Advance Payment

The first advantage is that you do need to pay in advance for a stock of products that you are going to sell. In the drop shipping business, all you need is a means to display the products such as on your website. You do not need to pay in advance because when you receive an order, you have to forward it to the drop shipper. The drop shipper will then deliver the product directly to the customer.

No Risk of Wasting Money

Since you will not be making any advance payments, you will not be bearing any risks at all. You do not need to worry about purchasing hundreds of units of a product and not making any sales out of it. Your drop shipper will be bearing all the risks and not you. Another benefit is that your start up costs is really low which only includes an initial deposit to the drop shipper and your advertising fee.

You Do Not Have To Worry About Product Delivery

As a middleman, you do not have to take the responsibility of delivering products to your customers. The drop shippers take care of product delivery for you. This means that you do not have to waste your time and energy into thinking about delivery and order fulfillment. You can use this valuable time to focus more on marketing your business and coming up with strategies of doing it better.

Flexibility

Another advantage of drop shipping is that you are free to choose how many products you are willing to promote on your website. You can choose as many products as you like as long as they fall under the category of products you are selling. It is very important to focus on a single category and avoid promoting a lot of unrelated products on the web catalogue.

No Need for a Warehouse

In the drop shipping business, there is no need for warehousing as you will not be purchasing or stocking a huge inventory of products. You do need to look for a location for a warehouse, you don't need to pay monthly rents for a warehouse and most importantly, you don't need to take the responsibility of stocking products. You can easily cut out on the costs of warehousing and maximise your profit margin significantly. Your drop shippers will stock the products until a customer makes a purchase. If you are considering starting an online retail business while minimising the hassles of inventory and delivery, drop shipping is the option for you. Drop shipping has many advantages and is definitely a great choice for a small business retailer.
