It's hard to imagine that the first mixed martial artists lived several thousand years ago and wore nothing (not even fight shorts!) save the victors' laurel wreath. However, if the ancient Greeks had worn fight shorts, they'd likely have the same garment expectations as contemporary mixed martial artists. And if you're an MMA artist, we're sure you'll agree.
Firstly, it is understood that mixed martial artistry is all about movement -- movement that is swift, exacting and capable of quickly subduing an opponent. And because of these movement techniques -- striking (punches, kicks, knees or elbows) and grappling (takedowns, sweeps, throws, and pinning, submission and clinch holds) -- your shorts must be particularly flexible. Besides, a Spartan warrior wouldn't have time to worry about inflexible clothing, so why should you?
Okay, okay, so the ancient Greeks didn't wear fight shorts, but it's safe to assume they'd shop for the following features if they had.
Comfort: Due to the nature of this sport, your shorts will need to be comfortable with elastic or chafe-resistant waistbands, drawstrings, Velcro or other features that ensure a proper and secure fit. And don't forget about the need for moisture-absorbent fabric, a.k.a. wicking. There's nothing like working up a sweat in clothing that is ill-fitted or constructed of fabric that doesn't breathe.
Tear resistance: It goes with saying that your shorts will need to be tear resistant. After all, this is hand-to-hand, knee-to-knee, shoulder-to-shoulder, fist-to-fist or any combination thereof combat, and rips to clothing are expected and commonplace.
Durability: You need your shorts to last for numerous wears; therefore, cheap just simply won't do. This sport demands that your shorts be made of quality fabric, featuring extra stitching to the groin area, waistband and seams. And as an added bonus, many shorts feature an internal pocket for mouth guard safekeeping outside the ring.
Appeal: You are a mixed martial artist who takes pride in your physique. Fittingly, this pride should extend to your fighting gear. Many suppliers offer a variety of brands including Clinch Gear, Sprawl Fusion, Jaco Resurgence, Triumph and more, so there's no excuse for not looking your best.
From the time of the pankration events during ancient Greek Olympic Games to the modern mixed martial arts we see today, the long and the short of it is this: You need fight shorts that are comfortable, attractive and tear-resistant with fabric that moves and breathes.
