You can't beat the countryside for fresh air and exercise but it is important to be dressed appropriately if you want to avoid the 'townie' label. A serviceable jacket, jeans, boots and a piece of men's jewelry such as sports watch are both practical and rugged. But why not consider a leather Harrington jacket and cargo pants, rollneck jumper and cords or a classic military coat and black skinny jeans.

Don't wear a tweed hacking jacket, cords and riding boots if you don't know one end of a horse from another. This outfit is only suitable if you ride on a regular basis.

Weekend in the country

If you and your partner have planned a cosy weekend in a country cottage complete with country pub then choose clothing which is casual and comfortable.

Jeans are a good standby and there are lots of different styles and colours to choose from. Stone wash jeans; skinny, slim fit, regular or bootcut the choice is yours. Team this with a check or tartan shirt, quilted jacket and a pair of military style boots.

Add a cardigan, roll neck jumper or sweatshirt if the temperature suddenly drops.

This outfit is suitable if your idea of a good walk is no further than the country pub. But if you are planning something more challenging then dress in the appropriate clothing such as a waterproof jacket, walking trousers and boots. Choose clothing which is warm, waterproof and practical.

Avoid jeans as they tend to cling to you when wet.

Winter coats

The most important item in your wardrobe is a winter coat. Choose a technical walking jacket such as those made by the North Face or Berghaus if you are a serious walker or climber. But if you want something which looks good in both the town and country then go for something which is warm yet stylish.

A parka is a great jacket for keeping out the cold. Now, your only contact with a parka may be the snorkel parka with the fur lined hood and bright orange lining which was popular in the late 70's and 80's. But parkas have moved on since then and are currently 'on trend' at the moment. Choose from an olive green Burberry parka, quilted lined parka jacket, mountain parka or an expedition parka.

If you don't fancy a parka then choose from trench coats, pea jackets, duffle coats, quilted coats and leather jackets.
