Thomas Alva Edison and Nikola Tessla's electrical power - be it hydro or thermal coal generated are truly our compliant servants. They wash and dry our clothes, clean our dishes either heat our homes or circulate air from our gas or even solar furnaces. They may even disinfect our homes of the swine flu bug with ultraviolet UV light filtration. Get electrical power is a double edge sword. Lay down your guard and in a moment the very power that serves you may bite you in a flash. Pay great attention to simple power smart rules around your home, office and vacation cottage.

EXTENSION CORD SAFETY - Purchase cords from reputable stores. - Use extension cords correctly where it is rated. - Never try to extend the length of your extension cord by connecting it with another extension cord. - Always consider the length of the cord that you will use when buying one. - Routinely check extension cord before use. - Damaged cords should be replaced urgently.

- Do not run extension cords under furniture or carpeting. - Extension cords should not be used as a permanent electrical circuit. - Never ever overload electric circuit. Plug only a single appliance for one receptacle outlet.

- If outlets and switches are warm, have an electrician check it. - Never touch broken cords.

GROUND FLOOR CIRCUIT INTERRUPTER (GFCI) GFCIs are designed to protect the body from severe or a lethal shock by switching off the power from any malfunctioning circuit. This device detects ground faults. Ground faults happen when current is leaking somewhere and electricity escapes into the ground. It can also prevent some electrical fires and reduce the severity of others by interrupting the flow of electric current.

APPLIANCE SAFETY - Never place kitchen appliances near a hot gas or electric burner. - Do not use or operate appliances in wet areas. - Do not touch electric appliances when your hands are wet. - Unplug any appliance that is not in use. - Follow the manufacturer's instruction for plugging an appliance into a receptacle outlet. - Make sure an appliance is off before plugging it. - Avoid using electric appliance in the bathroom. - Never unplug an appliance by pulling the cord.

Another extra precaution that we should give consideration of is when there are kids in the home. Kids are active, carefree and are so curious about things that they touch and manipulate almost anything that catches their sight. All too often, no matter how much we hope we could, we just couldn't have our eyes fixed on them 24/7.The most common injury that children encounter is shock or electrocution which is indeed serious and fatal. We can avoid this by keeping out of their reach wires and plugs. This way they won't be able to plug appliances .Ensure also that outlets and receptacles have safe covers for their protection.

It is always a must to remember that we should each be responsible enough to practice electrical safety measures in our home for the safety of ourselves and of our families and of our possessions. This way we could also protect other people's safety, life and property.

Remember lightening and electrical power accidents can happen in a flash to both yourself and your family - be it at home, office or summer vacation cottage. Play it safe. Safety does not cost time and effort. Safety pays.
