When you are wanting community service hours but would much rather spend your time outside in another country than indoors a few blocks from your home, there are plenty of options. Outdoor community service projects let you soak in the summer sun while enjoying beautiful environments and making a real impact in another country without the resources available in your own community. Here are just a few ways to serve outdoors abroad:

1. Create Safe Play Spaces for Children

While playgrounds and grassy fields are abundant in the United States, many children around the world play in the streets or in dangerous locations. Travel to another country and help build a playground or clear a lot for a play space, and see the smiles you bring to the faces of kids who love to play.

2. Work in Sustainable Agriculture Initiatives

Travel to countries where food is in high demand and help people plant gardens and farms that will be a sustainable source of food into the future. Your work will continue to have an impact long after you leave as the indigenous people take the techniques you taught and pass them along to others.

3. Complete Marine Conservation Projects

If you are interested in marine biology and environmental conservation, one of the best ways to complete community service outdoors is to jump in the water and help with conservation projects. Travel to some of the most spectacular marine environments in the world, such as tropical reefs, and do your part to preserve them for future generations.

4. Build Rural Schools

Take a break from the high-tech classrooms you are used to in the United States and serve abroad building small rural schools. Giving kids a place to learn helps encourage them to attend school and learn in ways that will impact their communities as they grow into adults.

5. Restore Historic Buildings and Sites

Learn about the rich history in another country and participate in community service outdoors by working to restore a historic building or site. Keeping these key locations intact gives the people of the country evidence of their past and gives travelers like you a glimpse into the forces that have shaped the culture.

If planning a trip that includes some or all of these components seems overwhelming to you, remember that there are many companies that offer trips that include outdoor community service. They do all the planning, and all you have to do is show up and work hard.
