A hairdresser does much more than cut hair. If a hairdresser is not in tune with her customers, it will be difficult, if not impossible, for her to fully perform the duties of her job. There is quite a bit that goes into being an effective hairdresser, and one does not want to come up short.

If you go into the job thinking all you need is a pair of scissors and a blow dryer, you will be in for quite a surprise. In reality, that is such a small part of what you need to do. People expect a lot of things from their hairdresser, and you do not want to disappoint them.

When you train to become a hairdresser, you want to make sure you do everything you need to do in order to become the best you can be. Since there is so much that goes into being a hairdresser, there is quite a bit of training involved.

Before you enter into the training, though, you must work to make sure you encompass the traits necessary in order to be a great hairdresser. Then, when you go into training you will already have some knowledge of what is expected of you so you can do a great job when you start in a salon.

Understand the Customer

Understanding the customers that come in is incredibly important when you are a hairdresser. Customers are not always able to communicate what they want, but they still expect their hairdresser to do what they want. This can cause some confusion for hairdressers.

No matter how confused, a hairdresser must find a way to understand the customer. Through understanding, the customer can get the haircut they want. That means the hairdresser will need to learn how to pick up on visual cues from the customer. That will help create a positive customer and client relationship.

You have to realise you will know some clients better than others. Clients that you work with on a regular basis will be easier for you to read than new clients will be. However, you have to be able to read new clients as well as clients you have served in the past.

This means you must be good at reading people when you first meet them. You need to be able to look at someone and tell what they want even if they are not very good at communicating it.

Customers often expect hairdressers to be mind readers. While you do not really have to learn to read the customers' minds, you will need to come close to that. You will need to find a way to understand what they mean, even when it is not very clear.
