For those that are planning on visiting another country whether on business or for pleasure it is always a good idea to buy foreign exchange. There are many different payment methods accepted around the world and each of them require some type of small surcharge for the currency conversion.

If you do a bit of research beforehand you can find out how to get the best exchange rates and what payment options charge the lowest fees.

Many times you will have a favorable exchange rate so that for $1 you will get $1.5 in the new currency. Therefore you will find your trip costing less than you thought. However this also works in the opposite direction where you may not have a favorable exchange rate and you will need $2 for every $1 in the new currency. This exchange rate does change a little everyday so you need to see what the current average exchange is.

Some of the best rates can be found using your credit card or ATM card as you will get the rate for the date of purchase. You can expect to have a fee that is 7% less than if you were exchanging travelers checks or even cash. Be aware that almost all credit cards will charge you a currency conversion fee for each purchase that tends to be a percentage of the price.

Many times you can use your ATM card to withdraw cash in the foreign currency but it gets deducted directly out of your home account. This is quite easy. To forgo any fees just make sure you use a bank that is in the same family or partner with your home bank. You may need to make sure you have the proper account to do this and you will need to have a debit card as a plain ATM card will not work.

If you do not like using credit cards and still like to pay using cash or exchanging traveler's checks then there are some things you can do to ensure you get low rates. Make sure you make the exchange in the foreign country and try to exchange your money or checks at an American Express office, bank or post office. The places with the highest rates include train stations, airports and other tourist hot spots.

There are even some countries that have an agreement to have a fixed exchange rate. They will allow you to pay in their currency or your currency.
