Motor vehicles have always been a great way to get around. They make travelling large distances easy and can be a great benefit to their owners. But for people in wheelchairs, getting around in a car can be a lot more difficult. Many problems can arise, from accessibility to space issues and more, so it's great that so many companies are now producing mobility cars. Also known as wheelchair accessible vehicles, or WAVs, these mobility cars are designed from the ground up to cater to disabled people and wheelchair users' needs.

How a mobility car can help

So why would you want a mobility car and how can it help wheelchair users specifically? Well, the primary benefit is that a WAV can offer a high level of freedom of choice. These cars are usually driven by a friend, carer, or family member and some can even be driven by the wheelchair users themselves. They're available in a wide range of styles, colours and interiors; many by well-known manufacturers such as Peugeot and Renault. Generally speaking, the safety and accessibility features in each of these vehicles is similar: a four-point wheelchair securing system, perhaps an automatic ramp, extra space for storage and many other wheelchair friendly features. They are also very spacious inside and offer a great deal of natural light during daytime journeys. Many WAVs are converted from people carriers, so there's plenty of space and big windows on all sides.

Enjoy your freedom, and get out on the road

Even if it's not the wheelchair user who is driving one of these mobility cars, the sense of freedom and liberation that can come from ownership is huge. There are many disabled people who feel like they are stuck inside or in a certain place, and a wheelchair accessible vehicle can be a huge benefit. It gives the person the freedom to choose where they want to go and when they want to go there. Rather than simply assuming that they are unable to do something or go somewhere, the wheelchair user will benefit from the increased confidence of knowing they have a means of transportation sitting right on the drive.

How to get a mobility car

There are many ways to get one of these mobility cars, and a lot of them provide significant discounts. So no matter what your financial circumstances is, you can enjoy the liberating feeling of owning a mobility car. The government runs an initiative called the Motability Scheme which works in unison with the Disability Living Allowance to provide access to a wheelchair accessible vehicle for wheelchair users. In many cases, these people can get their hands on a mobility car for next to nothing. And best of all, in three to five years they can get a new one free of charge. Even the maintenance costs of the car are included in the nominal monthly fee. For more information about the Motability Scheme and to find out if you are eligible, get in touch with your local council.
