Cairo is Egypt's largest city and also the capital of Africa. Far from boring, Cairo will give you a vacation that you will not only enjoy, but that will give you great memories to last for years on end. There are many interesting things to see in Cairo. There are many different historic buildings of the many rulers of the city including those from Britain, Turkey, Greece, Arab, Rome and France. These rulers spanned over 5,000 years of time. There are also fascinating artifacts such as the Sphinx that is in Gaza, just outside of Cairo. Cairo is also fascinating because of the rich Islamic culture that is there.
As you make your plans to visit Cairo, it's important to go when the weather is good. The summer months tend to be excruciatingly hot. Therefore, it's best to visit the city between the months of November and March. This is the cooler season and it will provide much better conditions for sightseeing and travel.
The oldest part of the city is called Coptic Cairo and is where the Romans originally built Babylon. This area of the town has been inhabited for over two thousand years. The Coptic Christian community considers this their focal point of the city and therefore, you will find many churches there. The Hanging Church is in this area, along with the Ben Ezra synagogue, which is Egypt's oldest synagogue.
Luxor is the area where the Egyptians tombs were made famous. Unfortunately, most tombs are empty. These and other artifacts are in the Egyptian museum. There are also sarcophagi and other relics in the museum that highlight the olden days of Egypt's glory. There are objects taken from King Tut's tomb, along with his solid gold mask that is magnificent.
Anyone who visits Cairo knows that one of the most enjoyable parts of the journey is to visit the bazaars. Here, you will mesh with the sounds, sights and smells of the city. You will find chaos here, as well as glory. Whatever you like, you will like find here, from shoes to carpets to veils. Be sure and leave your valuables at home and then get lost in a world that hasn't changed much in hundreds of years. And not only will you be able to get some amazing souvenirs, but you can watch them being made as well.
Most people who visit Cairo get around by walking. The city is laid out in such a way that walking is the easiest way to travel. You can take one of the hundreds of taxis, but if you do, be sure to settle on a price before getting in. Single men sit in the front, while single ladies sit in the back. More passengers may be picked up along the way. It's best to keep smaller bills on hand so you can pay the driver the right change. Once you take off, hold on and be thankful that you aren't driving!
