Many people are once again enjoying the game of Backgammon. Although the game wasn't so popular for several years, it has gained popularity once again. At first glance, Backgammon may seem to be a complicated game, but once the basic rules are mastered, it will become more fun. Perhaps a bit of help is in order, so we will delve into the basic rules of how to play the game.

The game is for two players. Each player throws a die and the one who rolls the highest number is the first player. If both roll the same number, then they continuing rolling until the tie is broken. From here on out, each player will roll two dice for their turn.

After the die has been rolled, the player can see how many points - also called pips - that he can move his checkers. Backgammon checkers only move forward towards the home board, which is at the opposite end of the board. Unlike other games, these checkers never move backwards. You can move your checker to any spot unless your opponent has a block, which means that there are two or more checkers occupied.

The number on each die can represent a separate move. For example, if a player rolls a 1 and a 5, he should move one checker one space to an open point and another checker should move five spaces to another open point. However, if the player needs to move six spaces to an open point, he can do that also.

Each checker on a point on the Backgammon board is called a blot. The goal is to hit or attack the opponent's blots. You cannot place a checker of a different color on a point, so if a player's checker lands on a point that is occupied by his opponent's blot, the opponent's blot is removed and placed in the bar. It will stay there until it the opponent enters it back into his inner board.

The only way to re-enter a checker from the bar is if one of the numbers on the rolled dice match one of the points that is not occupied by 2 or more of the opponent's checkers. Otherwise, the player will lose his turn. He may not be able to enter all of his checkers, but he must enter as many as possible.

The final stage of the game is called "bearing off." This is when all of your pieces are removed from the home board. Once there are not any checkers on higher points, you can remove a checker as well. Once you have accomplished bearing off all of your checkers, you are the winner.
