When you run your own business from home an essential element in ensuring your success is your effectiveness in dealing with all your business matters. You must always remember that it is not just a hobby and that your livelihood depends upon it. So you must adopt a positive business-like mindset and put in place systems and techniques that will drive your enterprise forward.

Key to your productivity in your business is being able to manage your time effectively and one vital aspect of taking control of your time is that of learning to manage your tasks efficiently. Some tasks will be straightforward such as "Phone John" or "Reply to Jane's E-mail". But others may be more complex.

All of the projects you undertake will have a variety of tasks associated with them, some small and easily accomplished, but others large and time-consuming. So you need to have a way of managing them so that your time is spent in the most productive manner. That means that before you even start any task you must devise and put in place a Task Management Plan.

The success of your business will depend upon it and you therefore need to consider the following:

What is the Task?

You must clearly define what the task involves, how it fits into the overall project, and what outcome you seek to achieve.

Have a Plan

Carefully plan out the task detailing exactly what you need to do in order to reach the desired end result. You must take your time over this to ensure you have taken into account all the minutest details.

What do You Need?

Identify the resources you need and set about ensuring that you have them available. Clearly define what tools and equipment you require for the completion of the task. You may also need to involve other people. Do you need to brief them or to arrange times for their input?

Define the Time-Scale

You must ensure you decide how much time you need for getting the task done and allocate time slots for the various parts. Have a schedule of what needs to be completed at the times you have set. Use a diary, journal, or planner to plan ahead. Make sure that you have milestones set along the path to completion so that you can measure your progress.

Specify the Quality Required

Ensure that you know what quality is required for any project or finished item and have a way of achieving and measuring it.

Monitor Progress

Put a process in place to monitor and assess your progress. Schedule in set times for reviewing your work. Check how you are performing against your plan.

Be Flexible

Be sure to have flexibility in the plan. Be prepared to make adjustments to ensure completing the task. Remember that by rushing to meet an unrealistic deadline you are more likely to make mistakes or reduce the quality of your work. This is bound to lead to wasted time later when dealing with the consequences.

Managing your tasks and activities is essential if you wish to get control of your time and ensure your home business thrives. Gain control and very soon you will see how much extra time you can create and how you can utilize it in improving your efficiency. Then you will find success just around the corner.
