When you're looking for garage doors, openers should be part of the package. If they aren't, find out how much extra they cost, what brand they are, etc. Even if the openers come with the doors, you'll still want to learn about them and be sure you know how to operate and maintain them correctly. A garage opener often takes batteries, but the newer openers operate for a much longer period of time without the need for a battery change or other maintenance issue. That's something to consider when you plan to get new doors and a new opener.

Talk to a licensed technician or service person about your current door, if you're just looking for a garage opener to go with what you already have. Maybe your garage door opener has stopped working, or you're finding that it isn't as reliable as it used to be. A technician can check it out and see if it's the opener or the door that's causing you the trouble. When it comes to garage doors, openers are one of the biggest complaints because they can stop working after a while - and that's aggravating.

Your garage opener should match the brand of your door, or be a generic, replacement brand that will work with several different kinds of doors. Either one is fine, as long as the opener does what it's supposed to do every time you use it. Even the best garage doors, openers, and motors can glitch occasionally and cause the door to stop mid-way, but this should be a rarity. If it's happening a lot, or the door is making a lot of noise when it opens or closes, the problem could be bigger than your door opener.

If your door appears fine and you aren't having trouble with the springs or the motor, your garage opener could definitely be to blame. You don't have to replace your garage doors; openers can be bought separately. Take your old opener with you, so you can show the company what you have. That way, you'll be more likely to get the right opener and you won't have to come back and exchange something because you weren't sure about the brand of your door or the kind of motor your door uses. Any licensed technician can help you find the right garage door opener to meet your needs, so you can get back to using your garage without any more problems.
