Pulsatile, or pulsating tinnitus is perceived as the sound of rhythmic pulsing that is in time with the heartbeat. This article describes some of the main symptoms of this affliction and gives you Tips to Rid Yourself of Pulsating Tinnitus.

It can sound like a whooshing or thumping sound. Its causes are different from continuous tinnitus. However, the two types can occur together and sometime the pulsating tinnitus type is reported as a side effect of continuous tinnitus where the continuous one is modified by the pulses in blood pressure caused by heartbeat.

True pulsating tinnitus mainly comes from within the head or neck region blood vessels when a disturbed flow of blood happens. This results from a change to the size of the blood vessel, either a widening or narrowing, either of which can cause a turbulent blood flow that can be heard in the ears.

The onset of this type of tinnitus can be caused by a serious underlying condition. Such conditions need specialist investigation so that they can be treated if they are serious.

Some examples of causes and tips to rid yourself of pulsating tinnitus are...

Fluid in the middle ear. This is normally an air filled space. As a result of an infection fluid can accumulate here. Fluids transmit sound more directly than air and so the sound of the heartbeat becomes more noticeable. Normally this is cured when the underlying infection is treated.

High blood pressure - hypertension - can cause turbulent blood flow or some pressure on the inner ear which changes with heartbeat. This type normally responds to medication fto reduce the blood pressure.

High pressure in the skull's fluid - the brain is bathed in a fluid that protects it from shocks. When people become overweight this fluid's pressure can rise and cause tinnitus effects like hypertension. This requires clinical analysis and confirmation. Weight management and diuretic treatment is often successful.

Bleeding in the brain. Sometimes, often as a result of brain injury or ageing, the arterial blood supply to the brain makes a direct connection to the veins returning blood to the heart by passing the capillaries. This increases the flow rate and causes turbulent blood flow in the neck. Again this causes a noise in the ear at the heartbeat rate. Again, this needs specialist analysis and treatment which may involve surgery.

Atherosclerosis is medical term for the narrowing of the artery resulting from cholesterol build-up on the internal artery wall. This narrowing reduces the size of the artery and results in turbulent blood flow that makes the pulsatile tinnitus sounds. This normally happens to older patients with a history of high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol or diabetes, angina and/ or smoking. Medication is frequently successful as a treatment.
