Many writers dream of being able to 'speak' directly to their readers without the bother or expense of editors and publishers. Being able to write without restrictions is a brilliant idea for any writer , most think it is very liberating and it is a refreshing idea in the dynamics of self publishing.
When you use a conventional publisher for your book remember that the publisher is taking a risk with their cash and resources. With risk comes the expectation of reward, and they use their own resources including designers and editors, to help make certain that the book will attract the greatest volume of sales.
So, because the publisher is risking his money and reputation, then their people will have a considerable influence on the completed work, which may not be what the writer wanted. The writer's plans are then subjugated to the publishers desire to print what will sell.
When you become a self publisher you are taking risks - but you can balance that against the problems of traditional publishing. Your cash gamble can be limited, tens of dollars rather than tens of thousands; you are risking time and reputation, not cash.
Further, you will carry the can for the project as well. You are the one who has to make sure that the editing, designing, project management and final preparation are all done to the top standard. A lot of this you can do yourself, given time to learn, but always ask yourself "is this the best way for me to reach my objective?"
Why self-publish anyway? Unless you have written something with mass appeal, one that people really would buy from a bookstore, then self publishing is probably the way to go - especially if you want to make some money from your efforts. I'm not saying it is easy, there's much to study as you progress, but none of it is very difficult and you can get help from many sources.
Here are the three main steps when self publishing…
* Authoring the publication's content
* Preparing the completed publication for production and sale including preparing the design and all contents, e.g. illustrations, Table of Contents, end matter, covers.
* Building a marketing and promotion plan and making it work.
If ever there was a dynamics of self publishing then this is it!
To begin, then is the authoring. Because you are not going the traditional publisher route the content is completely up to you. When you are writing for gain then you should pick a subject that many will be called to buy, so carry out your investigation well. Only then write your book or manual in an interesting but straightforward way.
This is where your editor can help. He or she can be a friend who has a critical eye, can identify spelling mistakes, language errors and plot or information inconsistencies easily. Choose someone whose standing you believe is valuable. It's really important to get another view to check your book so that it will be the best it can be.
Remember, when writing you need to touch the heart of your readers. For technical or instructional writing then you do this through clearness ofexpression, if you are writing a novel then it is the characters who come alive and the plot that drives the reader forwards to get that response. You are listening for the reader to say to themselves "I really like this, I want much more".
You'll find the other two stages in further articles, look out for them with the same title "The Dynamics Of Self Publishing", Part Two and Part Three.
