In response to my recent article "Where Do You Go from Here?", I received a comment from one of my newsletter subscribers that went something like this (I've edited out the personal details):

"I just want to let you know that I am 72 years old and I just got a very good job with a major corporation in spite of my age, it is a sad fact that many companies do have a nasty habit of discrimination regarding age, however if you do not succumb to negative thoughts or view yourself as a relic from the past there are companies that hire people for what they are capable of doing."

"One of the main reasons for the age issue is the cost of insurance for older employees, if you focus on the job and on what you can do and if you persevere you will get a good job because you will attract the right company not staffed with half baked idiots, also it helps if you avoid toxic people who keep saying you are too old to find a job."

Great comment...

Thank you! :-)

With her permission, I'm sharing her comment with you in this article as it so beautifully illustrates the main point I was making in my last one, "Where Do You Go From Here?"...

"Age" is only an issue if *you* decide to make it an issue!

Now...

When it comes to employment...

Are there employers who practice age discrimination?

Of course there are.

Does the cost of insurance for so-called "older" employees have something to do with it?

I'm sure it does.

However...

As she says so well...

"... if you do not succumb to negative thoughts or view yourself as a relic from the past there are companies that hire people for what they are capable of doing."

"... if you focus on the job and on what you can do and if you persevere you will get a good job because you will attract the right company..."

You see...

And this may come as a shock to some...

Employers usually have their own best interests at heart.

Now...

Like it or not...

This can work for you...

Or...

It can work against you.

It all depends on *your* attitude...

And...

On what *you're* willing to do.

When I was about to go out and look for my very first job, my Dad told me...

"Give anyone you work for at least 16 hours worth of work for 8 hours pay and treat their business just like it was your own, and you'll never be without a job."

You know what?

I almost hate to admit it...

But...

He was right. :-)

As a matter of fact...

Looking back...

Although I highly doubt he ever read a word of it...

It sounded very much like something Wallace D. Wattles wrote in his classic masterpiece "The Science of Getting Rich":

"Give every man more in use value than you take from him in cash value..."

And...

Therein lies the key...

If...

Regardless of your "age"...

You're sincerely willing to *give* an employer *more* than you take from them...

Far more than you take from them...

Far, far more than you take from them...

Acting in their own self-interest...

They'd have to be a complete, 100% total idiot not to hire you.

And...

If they are...

And they don't...

The next one...

Or...

The one after that...

Or...

The one after that...

Will!

And...

Be real glad they did. :-)

Remember...

"... if you do not succumb to negative thoughts or view yourself as a relic from the past there are companies that hire people for what they are capable of doing."

"... if you focus on the job and on what you can do and if you persevere you will get a good job because you will attract the right company..."

Extremely well said...

Thank you again! :-)
