When autumn deepens, and the leaves are falling fast and the temperatures are dropping, you may notice that the changing season is also marked by the appearance of the domestic fuel tanker.

The natural habitat of these vehicles is the country road as they seek out houses that have no mains connection so they can deliver the winter's supply of gas or oil. This fuel will run the heating boiler for the human inhabitants.

Inside the boiler there is a small flame - a pilot light - continually burning. Whenever the temperature falls below a set level, the thermostat tells the boiler to fire up. Because the pilot light is alight all the time, it is used to ignite the main burners to start the heating.

If you're wondering where I'm going with this summary of heat engineering(!) here it is. Each and every one of us has an inner flame, like a pilot light. Our inner flame is always alight, whatever is going on in the outside world.

When the right fuel is supplied, our inner flame ignites our inspiration and we enjoy the tremendous energy, creativity and fulfillment that flows from it. This fuel might be added consciously, perhaps by following one of the many techniques I have covered in previous articles (see below). Alternatively our inner flame can also be supplied fuel without our conscious intervention. When this happens we become inspired spontaneously.

Our pilot light also acts like a beacon, helping us to choose direction. The word pilot is commonly used in the worlds of shipping or aircraft to refer to a leader, someone out in front determining the way ahead. The word also suggests expertise in a particular field. So you could say that our pilot light is a metaphor for the leader within.

In other words, we have an inner guidance system. When we find something inspires us, we know that the right fuel has been found and our pilot light has fired up the 'main burners'. Being inspired is a way of knowing that you are on the right track. Conversely if you're not inspired you need a different fuel: you can be sure about this because you know the pilot light is always there.

Your pilot light can help you make decisions. Faced with the options, which one is most inspiring? If you choose an uninspiring option, what is the reason? What more inspiring way might there be to reach the same result?

Your pilot light is an essential part of being human. It will be there all through your life, an inner flame consistently burning, ready to serve your best interests. With suitable fuel, it will ignite your talents, your passion and your potential. Life will become hot with possibilities and you will find yourself navigating like a true leader.

Trevor helps people who want to be truly inspired, so they can enjoy the abundant energy, motivation and fulfilment that flows from it.
