Your skin is constantly exposed to different elements: heat, humidity, pollution, dryness, and more. As such, the quality of exposure it gets affects its health. Unfortunately, while there are some people who take extra precaution to care for their skin and make sure that it stays smooth and supple, others have no idea of how to best care for their skin. Your skin is highly important as it protects your body's internal organs from the harshness of the elements outside.

Skin care is a crucial habit that everyone must form and incorporate in their daily routine. It is not at all that difficult to establish, and once you get a routine going, it should be fairly easy to follow. Good skin care ensures that your skin is naturally healthy and glowing all the time.

Surprisingly, you don't really have to spend a lot of money investing in facial creams or toners to ensure the health of your skin. There are actually a lot of ways in which you can naturally care for your skin. You do need a few beauty products, but there is really no need to splurge and spend all your money on every skin care product that you can get your hands on. If you know what to eat and what sort of habits to form, you will easily be able to take care of your skin without spending a lot of money.

The 101 on Natural Skin Care

So you want to make sure that your skin is naturally healthy and beautiful all the time? Natural skin care is a combination of good eating and sleeping habits, and a few others. Here are a few pointers to think about:

What to Eat

There are certain foods that one should eat more than others in order to ensure that your skin is constantly on the glowing side. Here are some of them:

* Whole Grains - If you are a rice eater, try a mixture of brown and white rice to incorporate whole grains into your main meals.

* Apples - Eat your apples with the skin on, as this is known to promote good skin health.

* Almonds - They are rich in Vitamin E that promote healthy skin.

* Flax Seeds and Fish Oil - These are rich sources of Omega-3 fatty acids which promote skin health.

* Dark Produce - Dark green vegetables, dark oranges and other bright coloured produce are rich in beta-carotene, which promote skin health.

* Water - No matter what you eat, if you are dehydrated, your skin will look dull and parched. Drink plenty of water to keep the skin looking hydrated and glowing.

Other tips on skin care and food:

* Avoid foods and snacks that are extremely high in sugar. High levels of sugar pave the way to premature aging, which can cause your skin to sag and wrinkle at an earlier age, making you look older than your years. If this is one of your problems, begin decreasing your sugar intake very slowly. Never do this drastically as you will likely revert back to old habits.

* Avoid white flour and junk foods. These sap the body of vital nutrients as they lack nutrients and are difficult to eliminate as they lack fiber. Over a period of time, they gradually build up toxins in the body.

* Fats are to be generally avoided, but good fats can be fabulous for the skin. Some types of food that contain this are flaxseeds and fish oil supplements.

How Much Rest Should I Get?

You also have to ensure that your body gets the rest that it needs in order to allow time for your skin also to rest and rejuvenate through the night. A healthy dose of sleep is around 6-8 hours for adults and 8-10 hours for children. If you don't get enough sleep, your skin will age faster and you will appear more tired and haggard-looking.

Other Tips on Skin Care

* If you lean more on the side of alternative medicine, one of its premises is that good and healthy skin is a result of a very good digestive system. In other words, what you eat, when you eat it and how you eat it determines how your skin will look. To ensure that your digestive system works as it should, make sure you take in a lot of fiber and drink a lot of water.

* Use sunscreen when going out at noon and early afternoon - these are the times when the sun's rays shine strongest, and as such, are most dangerous to the skin.

* For glowing skin, make sure that you make exercise a habit. Exercise or engaging in active sports promotes increased blood flow, which in turn makes your complexion appear glowing.

* Cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturize - these are the basics of skin care. Make sure that at the very least, you are able to do this routine once or twice a day.

With right diet, exercise and rest, you can be on your way to healthy and beautiful skin without having to splurge on expensive skin creams and anti-aging creams.
