Everyone that buys a digital SLR camera has lenses in mind. You can change lenses at your whim. Usually the second purchase after you get the coveted Rebel Camera is a Canon Rebel Telephoto lens. It just seems like a natural selection after getting the main "walk-about" lens.

A Rebel telephoto lens is any one that has a focal length of 50mm or greater. Remember that cameras in the Rebel series have a crop sensor, which basically means that they will magnify the focal length by a "crop factor" of 1.6x. So a 50mm length becomes 80mm and a 100mm length becomes 160mm when you multiply them by 1.6.

You can get these lenses in two categories. You can get a prime, or single focal length, model, or you can get a zoom model. The question of which is better, prime or zoom, has been argued many times in camera forums. There seems to be two separate answers. First, if you are getting one lens (in addition to your main one), and you are going to use it for multiple applications, then a zoom would serve you well. The second answer assumes that you have a specific purpose in mind that would be best served by a single focus model. There are very few new digital SLR buyers who fit into the second scenario.

1. Major Magnification - the main purpose of telephoto is to get closer to the subject you are photographing. This is done through the magnification of the glass sets. When you can not be up close enough to use a normal lens, magnifying the subject works wonders. One of the most popular uses is in travel or vacation photography when capturing images of your favorite sights is not always possible without that major magnification.

2. Perfect Portraits - the best focal length for taking a portrait is generally about 85mm, but many excellent photographers use even longer lengths for their portraiture. These longer lengths do two things that help to make your portrait better. First, it keeps your subject in the right perspective, rather than distorting their features, which is possible with a wide angle (short focal length) lens. Second, the longer length coupled with a wide aperture gives a nice blurry background, which is highly desirable in portraits.

3. Wildlife Wonders - you don't have to be a National Geographic professional photographer to want great wildlife pictures. Most of the time, it is not possible to get good pictures of timid animals and birds without a longer focal length. However, with the right focal length and some luck, you can get photos that will amaze yourself as well as your friends.

4. Sports Superlatives - obviously, you can't position yourself in the middle of a soccer field to get the best shot of your kid in action. This is another reason for a telephoto lens. You probably have seen those pro sports shooters with their giant lenses at nearly every major sports contest. They are nowhere near the action, yet they get the great shots with the athletes filling the frame. You can do this as well with your Canon Rebel Telephoto lens.

5. Concert Concerns - another perfect place to pull out your long lenses is at concerts when you are in the nose-bleed section, or even in the not-so-nose-bleed areas. Once again, you can not go up on stage with Bon Jovi (or at your child's piano recital), so, a long length lens with a wide aperture is the perfect choice.
