There are a lot of different types of senior living facilities. An assisted living facility falls somewhere in between a nursing home and an independent living community.

Assisted living facilities are residences that were designed to offer senior citizens an option if they need help with their daily living but want to remain as independent as is possible.

Typical assisted living centers usually offer various support services such as bathing, dressing and medication administration while providing the residents with considerably more privacy and freedom than they would find in a nursing home.

Unlike the state of affairs with nursing homes, there are no federal standards for assisted living facilities. Consequently, each state has defined assisted living facilities differently. Although roughly 67 percent of the states use the term "assisted living," some states refer to assisted living facilities as "personal care homes" or "residential care facilities."

These residences might be as large as a college campus that has several buildings and houses hundreds of people to as small as a house that has only a few beds. There are usually common areas in every residence where the people who live there can socialize and participate in different activities.

In addition, the majority of assisted living facilities have a centralized kitchen that prepares up to three meals per day for the residents. However, some facilities only serve breakfast and lunch to their residents.

Although a trained staff is available 24 hours per day, seven days a week, some modern facilities offer high levels of privacy to their residents. The residents find that they have almost as much privacy as they would have if they lived in a "regular" apartment complex.

The rooms and apartments are designed to make the residents feel comfortable. Unlike nursing homes, there is no need for medical equipment. Consequently, the people who living in these facilities feel as if they are living in a community that also has the added benefit of having a trained staff available to assist them with their needs.

Most of the people who live in these residences need some help with their daily lives but don't need the intensive care that is offered by a nursing home. The residents are in relatively good health and aside from their specific needs they are able to live on their own.

If you are looking into an assisted living facility for someone you love you should also keep in mind that some licensed assisted living facilities might also care for other residents such as those with special needs or those who are mentally challenged.

You should also do your due diligence in order to determine if there was any nursing home abuse at any residence that you are considering for your loved one.
