Diabetes is a condition that many people dream of not having. Why? When you have diabetes, you will have it forever and you will need maintenance medications such as insulin injections to control your blood sugar. Having diabetes, on average, can increase your personal healthcare costs by 2.3 times more than average medical expenses for people without this health condition. In Florida, almost one in 10 residents has diabetes.

The holiday season is the most challenging time for diabetics because they need to face situations that increase the risk of diabetes-related problems. This is why November has been designated as National Diabetes Awareness Month. Here are three ways your Florida health insurance plan can help reduce the risk.

How Can Florida Health Insurance Help With Diabetes?

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act by President Barack Obama, preventive care services are fully covered by current Florida health insurance plans. Due to this provision in the health care reform law, diabetics can check their blood sugar levels without any out-of-pocket costs. What services are 100 percent covered when you go to in-network providers using your Florida health insurance plan?

You can check your blood glucose levels. For people with pre-diabetic levels, it is essential to test blood glucose (the main sugar created by the body from food) as signified by National Diabetes Awareness Month. If your blood glucose is not managed properly, it can critically contribute to the development of complications such as eye problems and heart disease as well as dangerous foot and leg conditions.

There are various blood glucose tests available. The first one is the FBS test (fasting blood sugar). This is usually done to check for pre-diabetes or diabetes. The other one is the two-hour postprandial blood sugar test. This will measure how well your body digests various levels of sugar. Blood is taken two hours after a meal is eaten.

For healthy individuals, a random blood sugar test is performed. This can be conducted anytime throughout the day since glucose levels do not vary much. As for pregnant women, an oral glucose tolerance test is performed to determine the presence of gestational diabetes. Blood is taken after drinking a glucose concentrated liquid.

You can get flu shots when you have a FL health plan. People with diabetes have an increased risk of dying from influenza or pneumonia. They are five times more likely to need hospitalization for flu complications. Vaccinations for influenza are completely covered under preventive care.

You can also consult your physician and seek medical care if you experience foot problems. According to the American Diabetes Association, one in five people with diabetes who gets hospitalized are due to nerve damage causing the loss of sensation and reduced blood flow to the feet.

The sad part here is that many people do not realize they are already diabetic simply because they fail to check their sugar levels. Weight reduction can also prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. Medical care is very critical when you have diabetes. Having Florida health insurance would definitely help you out.
