My article is not based on science; it just puts another slant on one of our most talked about topics in the world, kicking the smoking habit. Some will say that a coach who never played elite footie cannot be a successful coach. Wrong, a thousand times!

I could not run very fast, in fact I'm a real slow coach, true until a few days ago, mushrooming with a full bucket aren't speed enhancing tools, until I saw a bull approaching. I can run very fast now, that bull coming towards me changed my thinking considerably.

If I could have a say in deleting a word from our vocabulary, it would be "can't". How often is this word used when the right words would be "don't want to"? It is absolutely amazing what you can do when you have to or really want to. Ever stopped to ponder and be amazed what people who have lost a limb or became disabled can do? To my way of thinking, these people are role models who should be featured by all media to show those with the lot, what really can be achieved. Really, as a group, we are sometimes pretty pathetic in the get up and go stakes!

Now back to the filthy, unhealthy, selfish smoke sharing brigade. Putting messages on the cigarette packages that "Smoking Is A Health Hazard" is about as insipid as hitting an elephant with a feather. That's the trouble with our vote catching government regulators; they don't like spelling it out to hit the right note. You may offend someone. Well, as I see it, nothing is going to change until someone has the guts or nous to call it as it is.

There are thousands of companies making a fortune out of aids to stop smoking. The government loves the huge taxes it gets; the government wants you to stop smoking. What a dilemma, but they are brave, they make it mandatory to put a sign on your ciggy packet to tell you "smoking is a health hazard", goody-goody gumdrops, they've done their bit. No wonder the quit job is moving ever so slowly. At this stage I must come clean, I'm a non smoker, all I do is get a whiff from those that do, and I don't like it one bit. Remember what I said earlier about a coach who never played at elite level. They can and have often been hugely successful. So please hear me out, I haven't spelled it all out yet.

The roads death rates are and should be of great concern to the police and in fact each and every one of us. The roadside signs showing carnage, blood and guts are the nearest ways to get the message across. As a suggestion, the biggest offenders are going past so fast that they cannot read the message the signs convey. So the answer is obviously to spend advertising dollars on TV commercials, most of those who should be seeing the message surely will. Okay, this article is all about smoking, here's what I would do if I was Obama or Aussie Kev.

I don't know if either of them have a puff or not, however that is beside the point. They, and all other statesmen have a common problem, they administer a health department costing billions and billions of unnecessary dollars. The health issues caused by smoking would be a very large slice of this huge bill, and then of course to get a true net cost they would have to deduct what they reap by way of taxes on tobacco products. I'll let you in on a secret, it would still be an enormous cost to society, yes, and everyone pays for the smoking brigade, those selfish bees!

Forget the adverts prompting kicking habits, you have got to make a decision to want to live longer, be healthier, stop adversely affecting those around you, and stop frying your face. Billions are spent on cosmetics in an effort to make the most of ones looks, and then out comes a smoke to put another line on your roadmap face. So let's do the sums. Here are just some of the costs.

Smokers pay heavier life assurance premiums, and because you don't write out a weekly cheque you don't bring this into account. I don't know what the weekly average usage is, and it really does not change my story. If is say two packets a week, you are better able to do the sums than I am, the answer is plenty. Now the health issue, if you are not paying more for your health insurance than a non smoker, you should be. You can cost this out, if you so desire. But it is a real cost.

The real cost is your biggest and most valuable asset, your overall health. People work hard; enjoy the good things in life, a truly wonderful blessing there for every one of us to reach. So we have a puff and blow it all away. How stupid is that? There's more to this than just you, leaving your beloved family years before you need to is something to put in your pipe and smoke. Do you think you are being fair to your family? The answer is you are selfish, self centered and need to wake up to yourself and responsibilities.

Move over Obama and Kev; give me the reins for a few weeks and I will introduce legislation that will address the smoking problem. Before doing so, just think about the environmental changes in the course of being introduced. By a certain date the greenhouse gases reductions will be enforced, at enormous costs to everyone. No doubt huge fines will be in place for offenders. Your options will be limited, toe the line or else! Mine will be likewise. Stand by for an announcement. Six months from the date of this legislation, doctors and every health agency will add a Government charge of $20 (banks charge $30 for a referral if an account cannot accommodate the cheque issued) to smoker patient's accounts; this portion of the account will not be covered by Medicare or Health Insurance. This revenue will assist to meet the Governments health bill.

Tobacco companies will cease to operate 5 years from this date, this will give manufacturers and growers time to change their business direction. Tobacco growing will be totally banned from this date, hefty mandatory fines (no knuckle wrapping judges or magistrates will fiddle with these penalties) to apply to offenders. Just think, you'll be doing your bit for the environment too!

Just to bring everyone in line, if you are a doctor or health specialist you have 6 months to come clean, and to enter this group you will not be accepted into the profession if you are a smoker. Forget the word canto course you can. Try or pay, it's your choice.

When the dust dies down, and those offended decree to do something positive about quitting, please leave your message and email address on my website, I would like to send you a free present, because you really and truly deserve one. I salute the brave, I fine the others.

If you do sue, I remind you of my very small means. If I go to jail, I want a non smoking cell, that's not really asking too much!!
