Is getting rid of acne simply a matter of changing your diet to foods low on the Glycemic Index? Maybe not, but it has worked for many people. The causes of acne can be complex, which means it can be hard to come up with a cure-all solution. But strong evidence has emerged over the years that eating a high GI diet can increase the incidence of acne in acne prone people. Conversely, eating foods low on the list can help prevent acne outbreaks. So how do you do this?

It is much easier than you think. The best foods to help cure acne are really easy to get and are ordinary, everyday food. It is a matter of choosing the ones that you like and are easy for you to buy and prepare. There are any number of GI lists on the Internet, so the information is not hard to get. You need to choose from the foods that appear on the list at 55 or under, which are regarded as low GI. You can mix these with medium GI foods, ones that are listed between 56 and 69, so the overall effect is still low.

Eating low GI food is important because the body takes longer to process these foods and to break them down into sugar. The longer this process takes, the less effect it has on your blood sugar. The foods that break down quickly create a surge in blood sugar, which your body has to control by releasing insulin. Insulin is a hormone which helps set up an acne environment. This means if you are continually eating high GI foods you are keeping this cycle going. You are not giving your body a chance to heal itself.

Here are some common low GI Foods:

*Vegetables - virtually any vegetable you can think of is low GI

*Fruit - most fruits are low to medium GI. Medium GI is any food that comes within the 56-69 range. For example, pineapple and kiwi fruit are medium GI but if you are eating these with other fruit, then you balance the total effect

*Fresh fruit juices are mostly low GI but not the bottled or canned varieties. These are full of sugar - high GI - and have no nutritional value. Either make them yourself or make sure they are freshly made

* Most pasta and noodles are low GI

*Multi-grain and whole grain breads are low to medium GI. White bread and white flour products are high GI

*Most dairy foods

*Lean beef and lean pork are low GI

*Cereals such as All Bran and Oat Bran are low GI, but popular cereals like Rice Bubbles and Corn Flakes are high in sugar and high GI

It is worthwhile making sure you are eating mainly low to medium GI foods, which are the healthy foods we should all be eating anyway. Getting rid of acne might be as simple as making up your diet from these foods and sticking to them as much as possible.
