Good health and clear skin generally go together. The reason for this is your skin is the largest organ in your body and if your body is not healthy, your skin will not be healthy. The best way to get a healthy body is to feed it good, nutritious food and to exercise it. This is interesting, because these are the two things we have to do to avoid obesity - one of the most common serious lifestyle disorders. The same things that cause obesity cause acne - poor diet, lack of exercise, lack of sleep and too much stress, among other things.

This can also be the root cause of many other ailments, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease. In other words, if you are neglecting your body it will repay you with any number of disorders and acne is one of them. On the other hand, if you look after your body it will reward you with healthy organs - clear skin being one of them. In fact, getting and keeping a healthy body could be one of the best and cheapest treatments for acne. This does not mean if you have a healthy body you will not get acne breakouts but it does mean they should be less frequent, less severe and heal faster.

The easiest way to get a healthy body and to make sure it is working the way it should is to pay attention to the food you are feeding it. You simply stop filling it with food that does not help it to work the way it should. This means making a few changes, but they may not have to be too dramatic. Here are some changes you can make to start getting your body healthy:

* Cut down on sugary drinks. These are sodas, soft drinks and commercial fruit juices. The reason they are bad for your skin is the way your body deals with them. Your body converts these very quickly into sugar or glucose, which increases your blood sugar level. Your body has to control this surge in your blood sugar to keep it at a normal level. It does this by releasing insulin, which is a hormone affecting your sebaceous glands. These release excess oil into your skin helping to set up an acne environment.

There is a close connection between what happens to your skin and what happens to the rest of your body. The same process that can give you acne can also make you fat, because insulin is a storage hormone and stores any excess sugar in the form of fat. That is why it is important to cut down on any food that converts to sugar quickly and sends up your blood sugar.

Here are some more foods to watch:

* Breakfast cereal. Most popular brands are very high in sugar.

* Confectionery of all kind

* White flour products - bread, cake, cookies

You can start by making a few changes in your diet by cutting back on these foods and replacing them with healthier ones. For example, drink plain water instead of sodas or squeeze an orange to get the natural juice. Eat whole grain bread instead of white bread. Once you think about it, you will find other ways of changing to a healthy diet. Make this a permanent change and you will see your acne breakouts reduce.
