Corolla is a range of cars produced by Toyota. Toyota is a Japanese company, which has been in the business of manufacturing cars since 1937. The name Corolla means small crown in Latin. Assigning the name-crown in different tongues to ranges of cars is a tradition followed by Toyota.
The Toyota Corolla was unveiled in 1966. Soon after its launch, the Corolla touched heights of popularity. By 1967, it was the most popular nameplate in the world.
The Toyota Corolla: Over the years
• Corolla E10: This was the maiden car of the Corolla range. introduced in 1966 in Japan, it was a rear wheel drive with a manual floor shift transmission. The engine, which wasmanufactured initially under 1000cc,was raised to 1077cc in response to a new entrant in the market called Datsun 1000.Toyota advertised this advantage of possessing a stronger engine in a big way by. In the same year, that is, in August 1966, the engine received another facelift and its capacity was raised to 1166cc.
• Corolla E20: It was launched in the year 1970. The Toyota Corolla E20 had some benefits over the former Corolla E10. Its suspension design in the front was improved with the inclusion of a swaybar.Corolla E20 was available in sedan of standard, deluxe and hi-deluxe grades of sedan. Deluxe, SR, Levin, SL and Sprinter were available as coupé.
• Corolla E30: Toyota brought out Corolla E30 during the fuel crisis in the US in the late 70s. It symbolized Toyota's unprecedented growth in the US market. Daihatsu, an affiliate of Toyota produced Daihatsu Charmant with a redesigned body. Corolla E30 was a third generation model and is dubbed as having longest run as a car model probably because of the economic downturn of the 1970s.
• Corolla E70: It was released in 1970 with one of a kind design and style. This was the last generation of cars having rear wheel drive. This range of Corolla E70 had many additions. Some of the features were 4 round headlamps introduced in the late 1970. Several advancements followed in the year of 1982 - bumpers, wraparound headlights etc. This generation saw Toyota making cars in a new light. New principles were added as to the concept of manufacturing of cars. Besides, consciousness about saving the environment and energy had already entered into the psyche of engineers.
• Corolla E80: In early 1983, Toyota released Corolla E80. With 1839 cc 1C diesel engine,it had a bonnet with sloping front and very clean look to it.
• Corolla E90: Equipped with a front wheel drive; this sixth generation Corolla had a softer look.
• Corolla E100: This was the seventh generation Corolla model, which boasted of an aerodynamic look. It was bigger and bulkier than its predecessors were.
• Corolla E110: A great technological improvement was evident in Corolla E110 when Toyota introduced cylinder heads and engine blocks made of aluminum.
• Corolla E120 and E130: Toyota took big strides in technology with its Corolla E120 and E130.
• Corolla E140 and E150: in October 2006, tenth generation of The Toyota Corolla series was introduced with Corolla E140 and E150.
Cars designed and developed by Toyota are unique and advanced. No wonder, it has been a leader in automobile industry for the past many decades.
