Annual Garage Door Cleaning Adds Shine, Luster, and Life to Existing Garage Doors

Regular annual garage door maintenance is important to keep doors and openers operating smoothly. An hour or two of time each Spring and Fall to tighten bolts, clean out tracks, and ensure proper balance will cut costs on replacements and repairs. As Benjamin Franklin said, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure; that even goes for home maintenance and garage entries.

But garage door service is more than just a balancing act of springs, tracks, and panels. Cleaning and protecting the doors is also vital to reducing wear and tear and prolonging the life of the doors. Especially on the exterior, garage doors are constantly battered by the elements and exposed to sun, water, dirt, grease, and oil. Thoroughly cleaning the doors each Spring and Fall, and using a good garage door protecting product is easily done.

Start with the doors in the down, or closed position. Using a garden hose, rinse as much dirt and debris from the exterior of the door as possible. This task is best done on a sunny day, as the person performing the work is almost certain to get wet and a bit dirty. A non-abrasive cleaning detergent, soft scrub brush, and bucket will also be necessary. Dry, no-lint towels will also be useful, and if the garage doors have windows, window cleaning supplies should also be on hand.

Once as much debris is washed away as is possible, prepare a bucket with a mixture of non-abrasive detergent and water. There are many good garage door detergents on the market, and it is a good idea to check with the garage door service that installed the doors on what type of detergent is recommended for the particular door in question. Using a soft brush that won't scratch the door surface, gently wash down the entire door exterior, making sure to get all grease and oil thoroughly off. Once the door is good and clean, use the hose to rinse it again.

Regular car wax can be used on many steel and metal doors, but there are also many good products available to protect and shine garage doors. Again, check with the door manufacturer or garage door Los Angeles service company that installed the doors for recommendations. Different materials require different waxes and protectants. Because of the wide range of products available, it is important to read and follow all instructions that come with the product.

Once the door is washed, dried, waxed, and protected, use a regular household window cleaner or a mixture of vinegar and water to clean the garage door windows. Simply spray it on and wipe the windows clean with a dry, lint free towel. Don't forget to wash the inside of the windows as well, and wipe down the interior of the garage door with damp towels. Be careful to get any oil or grease. Once the wax and protectant layers are dry, open the garage door and wipe off the bottom of the door where the rubber seal is with a damp towel. Combine this with regular track and garage door opener maintenance, and the door will last for many years of function and beauty.
