What does your perfect restaurant experience sound like? Everyone has an idea in their heads about how it should go from start to finish when they walk into any place to eat a meal. Some people prefer their waiters be chatty while others want them to do their jobs and not make small talk. It all depends on your personality and any good server should know what to look for and adjust their personality for those particular guests accordingly. Of course, catering and banquets are a little different because these people are usually celebrating something and are probably a little more chatty that usual. Not everyone has the right personality to be a server or a bartender, but those who do know exactly how to schmooze each and every guest based on their personality.
It is safe to assume that when you walk into a restaurant for a meal or a wine pairing dinner, the staff should be friendly and knowledgeable of their food and drinks. If you have any questions about anything, they should be able to answer your questions without hesitation. All staff should be experienced in answering the many questions guests have, especially if they are inquiring about a wine pairing dinner. Only servers who are well versed in wine and food pairings should be allowed to work these special nights that offer this deal. Everyone knows how frustrating it can be when you are eating in a fusion restaurant and the server cannot answer any of your questions! They have a job to do and they should be able to do it no matter what. If they are unable to answer all of your questions, they should not be working until they have been better trained.
When it comes to training in any restaurant, it should be more than adequate. There is a lot of new information for this new hire to learn so it will probably take a week or so for them to learn everything and feel comfortable talking to guests and customers about the wine pairing dinners and everything else on the menu. When it comes to eating out, people enjoy having options and having options means more for the server to learn. This may be a little frustrating for the server to have to train for so long, but at least they will be confident in what they are selling and that will lead to more tip money!
