So the question has been asked and the answer was yes. The start of a grand adventure awaits. Now all you have to do is plan out your big day. Perhaps one of you has already been planning this day for years. The guest list, catering, music, and even the location has all been nailed down and all but paid for. Then you run the numbers and discover that your dream wedding is going to start the relationship off drowning in debt just for one day....one party. Weddings and especially wedding receptions can be a huge drain on a couple's financial resources. Not everyone has financial help from parents or other family and have to go it alone. In that case and as far as I'm concerned, small weddings and reasonable sized wedding receptions are perfectly acceptable.
I recently heard that the average cost of a wedding these days is around the $40K mark. Forty thousand dollars is a lot of money to have to come up with, especially for a young couple. If you can afford it, go for the biggest wedding the world has ever seen, but for everyone else, just know that by no means do you have to "keep up with the Joneses." If you are limited by your financial abilities, don't worry about it and certainly don't max out the credit cards to keep up appearances. You can still have an amazing wedding even if you have to cut some corners.
Obviously the cheapest option is to get hitched at the court house and skip the wedding reception. It might sound a bit on the boring side, but it is cheap. This option allows you to skip the costs generally associated with wedding receptions like renting out one of the various Appleton banquet rooms and springing for catering which the final costs are highly dependent on how many people you invite to the wedding. Everybody likes a good party and that fact makes this option the least festive.
The next option is to have a full blown wedding followed by a wedding reception, but the trick is to be a bit more frugal. Cut down on everything from the guest list and the catering to booking a smaller venue. Just invite the people that are the most important to you and your partner. Isn't that all that should matter is that you have your closest family and friends there to witness the wedding? By having a smaller guest list, it will allow you to look at any number of the smaller Appleton banquet rooms that are available. A smaller room should mean that it's a smaller price.
I guess that you should spend as much as you feel you ought to, but another recent statistic that I've heard is that as the debt from the wedding increases, so too are the chances that the relationship will come to an early end. Spend smartly, not recklessly and you should be fine.
