Finding the Right Gym

How many of us can say that all of our gym experiences have been perfect? I know I can't. I have tried so many different places over the years, and for a long time, I was completely turned off of the idea of going out to a gym to exercise. I figured out some techniques and things I could do at home, but the idea of working out publicly in such negative environments made me feel like giving up entirely. While it's important to develop the skills to be able to face up to adversity, especially when physically conditioning yourself, there is simply no excuse for gyms to not encourage acceptance of all people and body types. We are, after all, going to the gym for the same reason - to take total care of ourselves. So what's the big deal? Why is it so hard to find that kind of gym these days?

Physical fitness is something that everyone needs to be aware of, regardless of where you are in your relationship with your physical health. Even the buffest sports performance artist needs to maintain a certain level of muscle, and that isn't always easy. The gym is the place to do that maintenance. Miami has so many great natural options for outdoor exercise - swimming in the ocean, bike riding along the beach, etc. - but the fact is that unless you are attending personal training Miami or group training Miami workouts, your body isn't getting enough of the challenge that it needs to really excel physically. If you aren't excelling physically, you can't excel mentally. If you aren't used to exercising at all and are unhappy with the way that you feel physically, you're probably more than a little beat up mentally, so you need a gym that is active in its encouragement of everyone joining.

My local favorite is one of those gyms. Locally, it provides a hub where people can work alongside professional athletes who are working on themselves. This is both inspiring and encouraging. At another location, I might find myself intimidated and frustrated instead, but it all depends on where you are. It's the gyms' job to do what they can to curate an environment that draws smart, driven, focused individuals who are excited about physical fitness, and being truly excited about what fitness is and what it can do for you as an individual means celebrating everyone's journey - or at the very least, not giving people dirty looks when they're working out because they aren't the right body type for the gym.

For many of us who have body image issues, going out of the house is hard enough. We expect people to give us looks when we eat in public, or when we dress the way we want, or, really, when we do anything at all. Seeking help and change for our lives can be scary. With places like my gym, there is a sense of accomplishment, pride and possibility with every single workout, every post-exercise muscle ache, and every drop of sweat.
