Gas Fitting - Understanding The Basics

For a residential home, a business premises or an industry to function properly, there is need for the services of a plumber. There are different types of plumbing jobs and a plumber requires a variety of skills to take care of client needs.

A plumber may be required to carry out piping work in a large commercial building, other times he will be needed to unblock a drainage pipe in a residential home. This means there are a wide variety of tasks that are done by plumbers and one of these tasks is gas fitting.

About Gas Fitting

Gas fitting refers to installing, constructing, modifying, repairing and maintaining items which supply or make use of gas. Some of these items include pipes and other appliances and fittings. There are a variety of gas appliances which differ in how complex they are and on the amount of pressure that is needed to operate them.

An appliance can be as small as a domestic gas heater and can also be as large as an industrial furnace. Due to the varying complexities and risks associated with the appliances, they are categorized as being type A or type B. Gas fitting also involves appliances and fixtures that are installed in caravans, boats, trains and any other vehicle.

Gas Fitter

A gas fitter is a person who is involved in the installation and maintenance of appliances and fixtures that supply or use gas in residential, business or industrial premises. A gas fitter also installs other items that are related with the supply and use of gas for instance regulators, burners, gas meters and even valves.

Gas fitting requires a different set of skills from plumbing, which means that not all plumbers are gas fitters. There are however plumbers who are trained to provide gas fitting services like installing, disconnecting, repairing and servicing fittings which are a part of a gas system.

An efficient gas system produces water vapor and carbon dioxide when the liquid gas is burnt. However, a gas system that is not properly installed can end up producing carbon monoxide which is a health hazard. It is therefore important to ensure that only an authorized gas fitter installs your gas system.

Gas Fitter Tasks

A gas fitter carries out a variety of tasks including interpretation of drawings and specifications. They test piping which is used for gas appliances and they also identify the correct points where gas equipment should be installed. They are required to inform clients on how to safely use the gas appliances and how to maintain them. They also install systems which regulate the pressure of the gas and systems which will detect a leak in gas.

Choice Of Gas Fitter

You should be cautious when selecting the person who will provide you with gas fitting services due to the risks associated with improper installation of gas systems. You should ensure that your gas fitter is licensed to conduct the kind of work that has to be done on your premises.

You can get different quotes from a number of gas fitters in order to compare the prices. However, the cost should not be the determining factor of the gas fitter you will select but the reliability and skills of the person.
