LTO 6 - The Importance Of Backing Up Data

As your organization grows, you will find that the amount of data that needs to be stored also increases. It is not only necessary to store your data, but you also need to have a backup and recovery system in place. Finding devices that can accommodate large amounts of data in an efficient and convenient way can be challenging. The good news is that LTO 6 is there to sort your data storage problems once and for all and has a variety of benefits.

Tape Technology

The Linear Tape - Open technology is a tape storage that has an open format. The open format means that the technology is compatible with other storage media. The LTO 6 tapes and drives can be interchanged regardless of where you buy the products. The tape is known to be the most cost effective technology. It is a reliable method of storage that gives you the needed capacity, security and portability.

If you have a storage system that depends on the disk, the tape would be a good way of providing backup for your data. The disk is useful when you need a fast method to back up your data and when you need to retrieve your high performance data. When you find that you have data that is not used often, then it is time that this data gets moved to the tape. The tape is perfect for data that is hardly used since it is not only cost effective but less energy is used to store the data.

Importance Of Off Line Backup

An off line backup system is crucial since it is possible for your disk based system of backup to be rendered useless if you experience an error with your system. Data can easily get lost if you have a backup system that constitutes a disk drive copying its data to another disk. An error in the system can delete data on the first drive, which would trigger the same reaction on the backup drive. You will therefore end up losing all your data. Offline data backup is therefore very crucial to ensure you can recover all your data in case of any mishaps.

LTO Technology Development

The LTO 6 refers to the sixth generation of the LTO technology introduced in 2012. Prior to LTO 6, there were five other generations - LTO 1 to 5. The sixth generation LTO technology provides a storage capacity of 2.5 terabytes (TB) at maximum, and when the data is compressed the storage capacity is 6.25 TB. In the previous generations, the compressed capacity of data had a compression ratio of 2:1, whereas the sixth generation LTO has a compression ratio of 2.5:1.

The rate of data transfer for the LTO 6 is 160 MBps, while the rate of transfer for the compressed data is 400 MBps. LTO 6 drives are compatible to both LTO 5 and LTO 4 cartridges. An LTO 6 drive can read and write an LTO 5 cartridge, and can also read an LTO 4 cartridge. This is because with the LTO technology, each generation's drive has the ability to read and write the cartridges from that last two generations.

Backing up your data is crucial and could save you a lot of trouble and even your business in the future. Click here for more information on LTO-6 and how it can benefit your business.
