In this article, we will be looking at the use of PPC in your affiliate marketing business. For those not familiar with the term, PPC stands for Pay Per Click. This is a form of paid for advertising where you only pay if somebody actually clicks to open the advertising link.
PPC is regarded as one of the most effective forms of online advertising and is a $2 billion per year industry and it is increasing exponentially. It forms one of the main 4 online advertising search engines.
It works by creating a listing for which individuals or businesses, referred to as advertisers, bid on keywords to gain prominence in the listing. Obviously if you are top of the listing then it is more likely that people will click on your link and buy from you.
Although this sounds very simplistic i.e. the more you pay then the higher you are ranked, it doesn't quite work like that. The search engines, such as Google, have algorithms that give precedence to web page advertisements that meet certain criteria, such as fresh content, relevance etc. The list of requirements never appears to remain static and you could find that you are paying more for your PPC than someone who is higher in the ranking than you.
As an affiliate marketer, however, you only earn a commission if you make a sale or referral and you are totally dependent upon the product owner ensuring that their website is search engine friendly.
So why should you use PPC in your affiliate marketing campaigns?
The main reason is that by using PPC you will have targeted traffic to send to your affiliate promotion whereas your competition will be totally reliant upon organic or free traffic and as we know free traffic is known to have very low conversion rates. Also, if you set it up correctly you can capture the email addresses of those who click your links and so build your own list of targeted traffic.
There is a slight downside to PPC in that you will have "tire kickers" and freebie searchers who have no intention of buying and will just click on your link, costing you money, but this is the trade-off.
Another advantage of using PPC is that because they are targeted visitors i.e. interested in the product subject, you can set it up so they are redirected to alternative affiliate products if they decide they are not interested in the original affiliate product. There are many ways this can be done and some of those methods will be covered in future articles.
Yet another way to benefit with PPC is to have your own website with PPC links, could be in the form of banners etc. When a visitor clicks on the link they are taken to a PPC link that the advertiser has put on your page. They not only pay for the click but also compensate you with a referral commission, a sort of reverse affiliate if you like.
There are many more positives for using PPC than there are negatives. In fact, the only real negative is the cost because some clicks can be quite expensive and if you do get a lot of tire kickers then this can soon rack up the bill.
Even this scenario can be turned into a positive; many PPC programs will allow the commissions received by you, to be reinvested with them, as advertising to promote your own site, thereby generating more revenue for you.
The search engines are very proactive when it comes to affiliates using PPC. There are usually ready to use affiliate tools that can be simply integrated into your existing website. These tools usually take the form of search boxes, banners, text links and even some 404-error pages. Obviously you will need to check out what is available when you sign up to a PPC provider.
