As a Holistic Nutritionist, I get asked this a lot. Have you noticed that more and more people are going gluten free or trying to reduce their intake of gluten and wheat? Is this a fad? Why is this a relatively new issue? Is it something you should consider?
There are a few things to consider. The first, is that the gluten and wheat we are consuming today is very different in structure and amounts in food than it was many years ago. With the genetic modification of wheat, the gluten amount has gone up by more than 30 %! Since gluten is a "sticky" protein, many people are having a tough time digesting this high amount of gluten, and it's causing more health problems that people realize.
The second thing, is that not everyone needs to go completely gluten-free, but that most people would benefit from lowering their intake of gluten. Since gluten can be inflammatory, and inflammation is at the root of most illness and disease, reducing it can significantly help with low-level inflammatory issues and even reduce pain in health problems like arthritis and migraines.
Finally, with new information coming out every day about the weight-loss and health benefits of reducing or eliminating gluten from the diet, it is important to remember that it's still a relatively new issue, so testing for Celiac Disease, or for inflammatory response to gluten is still a very new idea. As testing improves, and becomes more available to the general public, I think we will see even more people discovering that while gluten may not be causing their illness, they certainly see that they feel better when they do not consume it.
If you are considering going gluten-free, there are a few other suggestions I would make when switching over. The first, is to take the time to find replacements to the bread items you love, that you can enjoy. If you feel like you "have" to eat horrible tasting replacements, you will have a much harder time sticking with it.
If you are curious whether a gluten free diet may be beneficial to you, the best thing to do is to give it a try. If you go gluten free, and find your belly bloating subsides, your thinking is clearer, and your skin issues improve, the chances are good that going gluten free may be a good choice for your health.
